Opc 14117 is an orally active superoxide radical scavenger that effectively crosses the blood-brain barrier. It inhibits oxidative stress cascades, leading to a significant reduction in tissue osmotic pressure and alleviation of brain edema in contusion models. Additionally, Opc 14117 blocks the NF-κB-dependent apoptotic pathway in striatal neurons exposed to Quinolinic acid, reducing necrotic volume, protecting hippocampal CA3 neurons, and restoring cognitive function.
