Variabilin is a potent antagonist of glycoprotein IIb-IIIa, functioning primarily as a platelet aggregation inhibitor. Isolated from the hard tick Dermacentor variabilis, Variabilin effectively inhibits platelet aggregation induced by various agonists, including ADP, collagen, and thrombin receptor peptide SFLLRNP. Additionally, it hinders platelet adhesion to immobilized fibrinogen (Fg) and blocks the binding of purified human GPIIb-IIIa to immobilized Fg.
