By competing with natural amino acids, it facilitates the uptake of boron into tumor cells, making it useful in boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT). Upon exposure to thermal neutrons, boron-10 undergoes a nuclear reaction that generates high-energy alpha particles, effectively inducing cell death in cancer cells, particularly in glioblastoma and anaplastic astrocytoma, while minimizing damage to adjacent healthy tissues.
