2-Acetonaphthone is a synthetic fragrance material known for its ability to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) upon exposure to UVA light. This mechanism induces endoplasmic reticulum stress and results in a decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential. It is utilized in research to investigate skin keratinization processes and can also serve as an adulterant in various cosmetic formulations.
