3-Hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase

Mitochondrial Enzyme

3-Hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase is a mitochondrial enzyme essential for both the synthesis and degradation of ketone bodies, playing a pivotal role in energy metabolism. It facilitates the conversion of 3-hydroxybutyrate to acetoacetate, a critical step in the utilization of fatty acids during periods of fasting. Dysregulation or deficiency of 3-Hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase can impede fatty acid oxidation in the liver, leading to lipid accumulation and potentially contributing to the development of fatty liver disease. This enzyme is valuable for research on metabolic disorders and energy homeostasis.
