Acetyl-L-carnitine

Neuroprotective Agent

Acetyl-L-carnitine is a neuroprotective agent that regulates mitochondrial energy metabolism and penetrates the blood-brain barrier. It selectively enters cells through the organic cation transporter OCTN2, facilitating fatty acid β-oxidation, enhancing acetylcholine synthesis, and mitigating oxidative stress as an acetyl donor. Acetyl-L-carnitine promotes neuronal protection and improves synaptic plasticity, making it valuable in research related to neurodegenerative diseases, metabolic disorders, neonatal hypoxic-ischemic brain injury, Alzheimer's disease, and depression.
