Adrenocorticotropic hormone

Tropic Hormone

Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) is a polypeptide tropic hormone synthesized in the anterior pituitary gland. It primarily stimulates cortisol secretion from the adrenal cortex through the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, playing a crucial role in regulating both cortisol and androgen production. Additionally, ACTH influences spermatogenesis and has been shown to mitigate acute inflammation in gout models by inhibiting macrophage polarization to the M1 type, reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and proinflammatory factors while preserving mitochondrial function. This hormone is valuable for research in fields such as inflammation, endocrinology, and metabolic diseases including gout and nephrotic syndrome.
