AICA-riboside, 5′-phosphate

Analogue of AICAR

AICA-riboside, 5′-phosphate is a phosphorylated analogue of AICAR that functions primarily as an AMP mimetic, selectively activating AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). It enhances the extracellular concentration of adenosine by competing with adenosine for uptake via nucleoside transporters, which can indirectly activate adenosine A1 receptors. This compound plays a significant role in metabolic regulation by promoting catabolism and inhibiting anabolism, as well as providing adenosine-dependent neuroprotection, making it relevant for research in metabolic disorders such as diabetes and obesity, as well as neurological conditions like ischemia and epilepsy.
