Cajanol

Isoflavanone

Cajanol is an isoflavanone derived from the roots of Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp., which primarily targets apoptotic pathways in cancer cells. It demonstrates significant anti-proliferative effects, inducing apoptosis through the upregulation of Bax, downregulation of Bcl-2, and activation of caspases. Additionally, Cajanol disrupts mitochondrial function, generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inducing PARP cleavage, while also causing cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase. It possesses antibacterial properties by damaging bacterial DNA and cell membranes. Cajanol is valuable for research into breast and ovarian cancer, as well as bacterial infections, especially in contexts of drug resistance and sensitization to chemotherapeutics like Paclitaxel.
