Calcimycin hemimagnesium

Cation Ionophore

Calcimycin hemimagnesium is a divalent cation ionophore that effectively transports calcium and magnesium ions across biological membranes. This antibiotic compound increases intracellular calcium concentration, inducing Ca2+-dependent cell death and promoting apoptotic and autophagic pathways. Calcimycin hemimagnesium also demonstrates antimicrobial activity by inhibiting the growth of Gram-positive bacteria and certain fungi, in addition to disrupting mitochondrial ATPase activity and uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation in mammalian cells. Its unique mechanisms make it a valuable tool for research in cell biology and pharmacology.
