Calcimycin

Cation Ionophore

Calcimycin is a divalent cation ionophore that effectively transports calcium and magnesium ions across cellular membranes. It is known to induce calcium-dependent cell death by elevating intracellular calcium levels, thereby triggering apoptotic and autophagic pathways. In addition to its role in promoting cell mortality, Calcimycin inhibits the growth of Gram-positive bacteria and certain fungi, along with suppressing ATPase activity and uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation in mammalian cells. This versatile compound is essential for research into calcium signaling, cell death mechanisms, and antibacterial activity.
