Carboxyatractyloside

Adenine Nucleotide Translocator Inhibitor

Carboxyatractyloside is a potent inhibitor of adenine nucleotide translocase, representing a significant toxic constituent of Xanthium sibiricum. By competing with ADP for binding, it effectively obstructs the translocation of ADP and ATP across the inner mitochondrial membrane, leading to the inhibition of ADP-stimulated respiration. Additionally, in conjunction with Cyclosporin A, Carboxyatractyloside promotes permeability transition in liver mitochondria, demonstrating pronounced hepatotoxic and nephrotoxic properties. This compound is extensively utilized in research contexts focused on hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, and the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease.
