(±)-Carnitine

Propionic Acid Gluconeogenesis Promoter

(±)-Carnitine is a racemic mixture of L-Carnitine and D-Carnitine that functions as a promoter of propionic acid gluconeogenesis. This compound enhances the mitochondrial NAD+/NADH ratio in the presence of 1,3-butanediol and has been shown to stimulate propionate gluconeogenesis in rat renal cortical slices while not affecting glucose and urea production from L-glutamine. Additionally, (±)-Carnitine significantly reduces hepatic ketone body levels in rats on a high-fat and 1,3-butanediol diet, making it valuable for metabolic research applications.
