Carrageenan

Viral Inhibitor

Carrageenan is a potent viral inhibitor with applications in antiviral and anticancer research. It effectively inhibits the herpes simplex virus (HSV), HIV, and hepatitis A virus (HAV) by binding to the viral capsid, preventing viral attachment to heparan sulfate proteoglycans on the host cell surface. Carrageenan also exhibits cytotoxic effects on HeLa cancer cells and is relevant for studies on cervical cancer and genital warts. Furthermore, it induces acute non-immune inflammation and triggers a multifaceted inflammatory response characterized by proinflammatory mediator release, contributing to edema and neutrophil recruitment in experimental models.
