Cyclic GMP

Second Messenger

Cyclic GMP (cGMP) serves as a critical second messenger that mediates cellular responses to extracellular signals such as nitric oxide (NO) and natriuretic peptides (NPs). Its biological activity is primarily facilitated through cGMP-dependent protein kinases (PKGs), cGMP-gated cation channels, and phosphodiesterases (PDEs). cGMP plays a role in inhibiting platelet adhesion and aggregation, making it significant in cardiovascular research. Furthermore, its derivative, cGAMP (Cyclic-GMP-AMP), has been shown to promote IRF3 phosphorylation and nuclear translocation, thereby enhancing antiviral immune responses.
