Diethyl maleate

GSH Depletor

Diethyl maleate (DEM) is a potent glutathione (GSH) depletor that irreversibly binds to GSH via glutathione S-transferase, exhibiting an in vitro IC50 value of 0.1-0.5 mM. This compound effectively reduces GSH levels in liver, lung, and brain tissues, thereby enhancing oxidative stress and potentially increasing hyperbaric oxygen toxicity. Diethyl maleate is valuable in research related to redox homeostasis and GSH protective mechanisms, particularly in the context of oxidative stress-related diseases such as hyperbaric oxygen injury and metabolic disorders.
