DMDM hydantoin

Preservative

DMDM hydantoin is a formaldehyde-releasing preservative that functions by releasing formaldehyde in response to various conditions, particularly in alkaline environments. It exhibits broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against fungi, yeast, and both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, making it a versatile choice for preservation. Due to its potential to induce allergic contact dermatitis through type-IV delayed hypersensitivity, this compound is often investigated in research focused on allergic reactions. DMDM hydantoin is primarily utilized in cosmetic formulations such as shampoos, hair gels, and skin care products.
