Ferumoxytol

Iron Oxide Nanoparticles

Ferumoxytol is an iron oxide nanoparticle that targets iron metabolism pathways, exhibiting significant anti-leukemic activity, particularly against acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells with low levels of the iron transporter protein (FPN). By enhancing intracellular iron accumulation, Ferumoxytol initiates the Fenton reaction, leading to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), resulting in oxidative stress and ferroptosis in cancer cells. This compound is instrumental for research into leukemia characterized by targeted iron metabolism alterations, providing a selective approach to eradicate leukemic cells while minimizing collateral damage to normal cells.
