Glutathione S-transferase

Glutathione S-transferase

Glutathione S-transferase (GST) is a phase II metabolic enzyme that plays a critical role in detoxification processes by catalyzing the conjugation of glutathione to various electrophilic compounds. It exists in three primary superfamilies: cytosolic, mitochondrial, and microsomal. GST exhibits diverse biological activities, including detoxification, thiol transfer, and chaperone functions. Notably, the GSTP1 isoform is overexpressed in numerous malignant tissues, making it an important tumor marker in cancer research and a valuable target for therapeutic interventions.
