Hemocyanin

Glycoprotein

Hemocyanin is an extracellular, copper-containing glycoprotein that functions primarily in oxygen transport across diverse invertebrate species, including mollusks and arthropods. In addition to its role in respiratory physiology, hemocyanin has been implicated in various biological processes, such as energy storage, osmoregulation, and exoskeleton formation. Research indicates that hemocyanin from Penaeus monodon exhibits antiviral properties against both DNA and RNA viruses, while that derived from Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda demonstrates antimicrobial activity through reactive oxygen species production. Furthermore, hemocyanin from Litopenaeus vannamei shows potential in inhibiting cervical cancer cell proliferation, highlighting its significance in oncology and immunology studies.
