Hydroxyacetone

F-actin Modulator

Hydroxyacetone primarily targets F-actin and functions as a modulator of its stability. This compound has been shown to induce mitochondrial stress and increase reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in cells, particularly in BEAS-2B airway epithelial cells, where it reduces mitochondrial reductase activity with an IC50 of 5.53 mg/mL. Hydroxyacetone promotes cellular effects such as rounding and the formation of apoptotic bodies at elevated concentrations, highlighting its biological activity and potential applications in research focused on oxidative damage and respiratory toxicity.
