Liquid Paraffin

Fecal Lubricant

Liquid Paraffin is a petroleum-derived mixture of saturated hydrocarbons that serves as an orally active fecal lubricant. Its primary application includes alleviating constipation and fecal incontinence, particularly in pediatric studies, through a lubricating and osmotic effect due to its conversion to hydroxy fatty acids. Liquid Paraffin is characterized by its high safety profile and non-carcinogenic nature, demonstrating no impact on fat-soluble vitamin levels with prolonged usage. While it is generally well-tolerated, rectal administration may pose risks of lipoid pneumonia and granulomas. Additionally, Liquid Paraffin can function as a phase change material for thermal energy storage or work in conjunction with nanoparticles to create protective boundary films that minimize mechanical wear.
