Lithium citrate

N-acetyl aspartate Inhibitor

Lithium citrate acts as an inhibitor of N-acetylaspartate (NAA), targeting metabolic disturbances associated with Canavan disease. This autosomal recessive leukodystrophy arises from mutations in the aspartate acylase (ASPA) gene, leading to elevated levels of NAA. By reducing excess NAA, lithium citrate is utilized in research to investigate treatment avenues for this condition and its associated neurological deficits.
