Metformin (glycinate)

Antihyperglycemic Drug

Metformin glycinate serves as an antihyperglycemic agent, primarily targeting mitochondrial respiratory chain activity in the liver. It activates AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), enhancing insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism, making it valuable in type 2 diabetes research. Additionally, Metformin glycinate inhibits Ras-related protein 1 (Rap1) in SF1 hypothalamic neurons, exerting central glucose-lowering effects. Its ability to mitigate liver oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis during ischemia/reperfusion injury, along with modulating autophagy-related proteins via AMPK activation and mTOR inhibition, highlights its potential in cancer studies, particularly in renal cell carcinoma.
