Methimazole

Anti-thyroid Agent

Methimazole is an anti-thyroid agent that inhibits the synthesis of thyroid hormones in the thyroid gland by blocking the enzyme thyroid peroxidase. This reduction in hormone production is critical for managing hyperthyroidism and other related conditions. It is important to note that methimazole may pose a risk of hepatotoxicity, necessitating careful monitoring during use in research applications.

In Vitro Studies

Methimazole was added to human heart microsome incubation mixtures before verapamil addition. Verapamil metabolite formation was only slightly decreased compared with incubations containing no inhibitor. [1]

In Vivo Studies

In mice receiving Methimazole intraperitoneally, freezing increased during the latter ‘post-tone’ period but not during the early ‘pre-tone’ period, without shock or tone delivery. Substantial weight loss was also observed in mice weighed daily after Methimazole injection. [2]

Methimazole and Freezing Behaviour in Mice

Animal study · Mice [2]

Mice were injected intraperitoneally with 75 mg/kg of methimazole (Sigma) in sterile saline or an equivalent volume of saline. Without any shock or tone delivery: an increase in freezing levels during the latter part of the behavioural sessions, referred to as ‘post-tone’ period, but not during the early ‘pre-tone’ period. The observed immobility is, therefore, likely to be non-specific to the fear-conditioning paradigm.
