Methyl α-D-mannopyranoside

Methyl Glycoside Derivative

Methyl α-D-mannopyranoside is a methyl glycoside derivative that serves as a conformational stabilizer of α-D-mannopyranose. In aqueous environments, it stabilizes into a trans conformation through intermolecular hydrogen bonds, while in the gas phase, steric interactions lead to a favored clockwise gauche conformation. This compound is a crucial component of secondary cell wall polymers in certain bacteria and functions as an acceptor substrate for alternansucrase, facilitating the generation of glycosylated oligosaccharides. Methyl α-D-mannopyranoside is particularly useful for investigating bacterial pathogenic mechanisms linked to mannose-specific fimbrial lectins.
