N-Acetylserine

C3b Inhibitor

N-Acetylserine serves as a complement pathway modulator by targeting the activated third complement protein, C3b. It inhibits the covalent binding of glycerol to C3b's exposed thioester group through its reactive hydroxyl group. This compound is predominantly found in the soluble proteins of mammalian cells, contributing approximately 80% to such proteins. N-Acetylserine's blocking property can hinder direct Edman sequencing of proteins, though it can be removed through trifluoroacetic acid-catalyzed N→O acetyl migration followed by β-elimination, making it a valuable reagent for protein analysis with N-terminal acetylserine modifications.
