N-Ethyl-N-nitrosourea

DNA Alkylating Agent

N-Ethyl-N-nitrosourea (ENU) is a potent DNA alkylating agent known for its ability to induce mutations by alkylating nucleobases. Its mechanism leads to disruption of DNA structure, resulting in bone marrow suppression and the generation of leukemic cells. Additionally, ENU exhibits teratogenic effects, influencing tumor formation and causing morphological abnormalities in developing embryos. This compound is widely used in research related to carcinogenesis, genetic disorders, and the study of central nervous system tumors.
