Nifurpirinol

NTR Substrate

Nifurpirinol is a selective prosubstrate for bacterial nitroreductase (NTR). Upon enzymatic reduction by NTR, it produces cytotoxic metabolites that effectively induce apoptosis in targeted cells. This compound demonstrates the ability to selectively ablate NTR-expressing cell types, including pancreatic β cells, osteoblasts, dopaminergic neurons, and podocytes in transgenic zebrafish models. Nifurpirinol is utilized in regeneration studies and disease modeling, particularly in contexts like focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS).
