Pediocin PA 1

Pediocin PA-1 is a class IIa bacteriocin that exerts its antibacterial effects by binding to membrane proteins of susceptible Gram-positive bacteria, including Listeria monocytogenes. This binding leads to the formation of voltage-independent, hydrophilic pores in the bacterial membrane, resulting in the dissipation of the proton motive force and subsequent ATP depletion, ultimately causing cell death. Pediocin PA-1 is primarily utilized as a biological preservative in food applications and for research purposes in the study of listeriosis, demonstrating minimal activity against intact Gram-negative bacteria and anaerobic gut microbiota. The functional integrity of Pediocin PA-1 is reliant on its disulfide bonds, with reduced forms displaying diminished antibacterial activity.
