Porfiromycin

Alkylating Agent

Porfiromycin, a bioreductive alkylating agent, exerts preferential cytotoxic effects on hypoxic tumor cells compared to aerobic cells. This compound works by forming DNA cross-links, leading to cellular damage and apoptosis in tumor environments with limited oxygen availability. Porfiromycin is primarily utilized in cancer research for its potential to identify and target hypoxic regions within tumors, thereby improving therapeutic strategies for hypoxic cancers.
