Punicic acid

Bioactive Compound

Punicic acid is a bioactive compound derived from pomegranate seed oil, functioning primarily as an isomer of conjugated α-linolenic acid and ω-5 polyunsaturated fatty acids. This compound exhibits notable anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, inhibiting the expression of inflammatory mediators such as tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α). Punicic acid has been shown to reduce β-amyloid formation and tau hyperphosphorylation, thereby supporting research into the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Furthermore, its ability to inhibit breast cancer growth through mechanisms involving lipid peroxidation and PKC pathways makes it a valuable tool in cancer research.
