Pyruvate carboxylase

Mitochondrial Anaplerotic Enzyme

Pyruvate carboxylase is a critical mitochondrial anaplerotic enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of pyruvate to oxaloacetate. This enzyme plays a vital role in maintaining the activity of the tricarboxylic acid cycle and redox balance, while also facilitating gluconeogenesis and fatty acid synthesis in the liver. In addition, pyruvate carboxylase expression is significantly elevated in early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), contributing to tumor proliferation through enhanced nucleotide and lipid synthesis. Research applications include investigations in prediabetes type 2 and NSCLC, where the enzyme's activity is linked to metabolic dysregulation.
