Sodium formate

GRAS Substance

Sodium formate is a recognized Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) substance that functions as a promoter for heterogeneous nucleation of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) crystals and thin film synthesis. It is utilized as a cosmetic preservative and food additive due to its low acute oral toxicity, with an LD50 of 7410 mg/kg in mice. While generally safe, high concentrations can lead to embryonic developmental toxicity and teratogenicity. Additionally, sodium formate exhibits moderate ocular irritation but is considered safe for skin contact and does not induce tumor formation in in vivo rat studies. In metabolic deficiency models, it can form DNA adducts upon high-dose exposure.
