Streptolysin O (SLO)

Oxygen-labile Streptococcal Hemolysin

Streptolysin O is an oxygen-labile hemolysin derived from group A streptococci, functioning primarily by binding to cholesterol in cell membranes. This exotoxin induces cytolysis and has been implicated in cardiotoxic effects. Streptolysin O is commonly utilized in research for the controlled permeabilization of cell membranes, facilitating studies in cell biology and drug delivery. It exists in two forms: a reduced active state and an oxidized reversibly inactive state, allowing for specific experimental applications.
