Tecovirimat

Antipoxvirus Compound

Tecovirimat is a selective antiviral compound that targets orthopoxviruses, such as vaccinia, monkeypox, camelpox, cowpox, ectromelia, and variola viruses. Its mechanism involves inhibiting the orthopoxvirus protein VP37, which is essential for the membrane envelopment of intracellular mature virus particles, thereby preventing the formation of enveloped viruses. Tecovirimat demonstrates potent antiviral activity, with EC50 values of 0.01 μM against vaccinia virus, 0.48 μM against cowpox virus, and 0.05 μM against ectromelia virus. This compound serves as a valuable tool for research into poxvirus pathogenesis and therapeutic interventions.
