Tempo

Nitroxide Radical

Tempo is a nitroxide radical that functions as a selective scavenger of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in mitochondria. It serves as an organocatalyst, effectively disproportionating superoxide and oxidizing primary alcohols to aldehydes within a catalytic cycle. Notably, Tempo exhibits both mutagenic and antioxidant activities, capable of inducing DNA strand breaks. Additionally, it demonstrates cytotoxic and mutagenic effects in mouse lymphoma cells, making it a valuable reagent for research on oxidative stress and cellular damage.
