Free Radical Scavenger

TMPO (3,3,5,5-Tetramethyl-1-pyrroline 1-oxide) acts as a free radical scavenger, effectively trapping reactive species such as superoxide and hydroxyl radicals. This compound demonstrates the ability to inhibit thymocyte apoptosis with EC50 values ranging from 19.1 mM to 30.7 mM, depending on the triggering agent, thereby reducing DNA fragmentation. TMPO forms stable nitroxide radicals upon reaction with intracellular free radicals, which helps lower oxidative stress by decreasing peroxide levels and maintaining glutathione content. It serves as a valuable tool for investigating apoptosis mechanisms in immune cells, particularly thymocytes.
