Tryptophanase

Inducible Enzyme

Tryptophanase is an inducible enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of L-tryptophan to indole. This enzyme acts as a zymogen-converting catalyst, able to activate its precursor form without the need for additional polypeptide synthesis. In Escherichia coli K12, tryptophanase exhibits induction kinetics comparable to β-galactosidase, making it a valuable tool for studies on gene regulation and metabolic pathways involving tryptophan catabolism. Its biological activity is relevant for research in microbiology and enzymology.
