Urea

Protein Denaturant

Urea is a potent protein denaturant that acts through both direct and indirect mechanisms. It effectively disrupts hydrogen bonding within protein structures, leading to denaturation. Urea is commonly used in biochemical research and biophysical studies to investigate protein folding and stability. Additionally, it serves as a diuretic agent and is utilized in clinical settings to assess renal function through blood urea nitrogen (BUN) measurements. Its utility extends to agricultural applications as a nitrogen source in fertilizers and as a critical compound in the chemical industry.
