Violaxanthin

Carotenoid

Violaxanthin is a lipophilic epoxy carotenoid that functions primarily as a light energy scavenger. It exhibits significant biological activities including antioxidation and anti-inflammatory properties. Found in photosynthetic eukaryotes such as higher plants, violaxanthin plays a crucial role in the xanthophyll cycle, where it is synthesized from zeaxanthin through the action of epoxidase, thereby helping to manage excess light energy. This compound is important for research in plant physiology and the study of photoprotection mechanisms.
