4-Ethylphenyl sulfate

Gut Microbial Metabolite

4-Ethylphenyl sulfate is a gut microbial metabolite that exhibits brain-penetrant properties. It has been shown to downregulate Bcl2 and upregulate Bax, leading to induced apoptosis in cancer cells through the endogenous apoptotic pathway. Additionally, 4-Ethylphenyl sulfate causes G2/M cell cycle arrest and increases reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. In neurobiology research, it impairs oligodendrocyte maturation and disrupts oligodendrocyte-neuron interactions, resulting in decreased axonal myelination and a shift towards immature precursor cells, which correlates with altered neural activity and anxiety-like behaviors in mice.
