5-Methylcytosine

DNA Modification

5-Methylcytosine primarily targets DNA modification and is a well-characterized epigenetic marker in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. This modified nucleotide is essential for forming symmetrical methylation patterns on CpG dinucleotides, influencing tRNA and rRNA stabilization as well as mRNA translation processes. Additionally, 5-Methylcytosine can be oxidized to produce derivatives such as 5-hydroxymethylcytosine, 5-formylcytosine, and 5-carboxylcytosine. It proves invaluable for research in epigenetics, developmental biology, and the exploration of various diseases, including colorectal cancer and hepatocellular carcinoma.
