Apoptosis Inhibitor
C-8 Ceramide-1-phosphate acts primarily as an apoptosis inhibitor by promoting cell survival and enhancing DNA synthesis and cell division. It exerts its biological activity by inhibiting acidic sphingomyelinase (SMase) while stimulating phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3-K), leading to the production of PIP3, which further inhibits acidic SMase. The balance between C-8 Ceramide-1-phosphate and ceramide within cells, mediated by kinase and phosphatase activity, is essential for maintaining cellular and tissue homeostasis.
