Coprostanol

Indicator Sterol

Coprostanol, also known as 5β-Cholestan-3β-ol, is an indicator sterol that forms through the microbial reduction of cholesterol in the intestines of humans and higher animals. It serves as a valuable marker for assessing fecal pollution in water resources, particularly in relation to sewage discharges. Additionally, coprostanol may act as a potential biological indicator for conditions such as cerebral chondrodystrophy (CTX), making it relevant for various environmental and biomedical research applications.
