Hemoglobin
Iron-containing Protein
Hemoglobin is an iron-containing protein found in red blood cells that primarily functions in oxygen transport and binding. It plays a crucial role in gas exchange by transporting carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, hydrogen sulfide, and sulfide. Additionally, hemoglobin acts as an inducer of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), contributing to antioxidant defense in tissues by absorbing excess oxygen.
