Monardic acid A is a selective inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), exhibiting an IC50 of 53.1 μM against AChE from electric eel. It displays weak inhibitory activity against human erythrocyte AChE (IC50 >100 μM) and negligible effects on butyrylcholinesterase (BChE). By inhibiting AChE activity, Monardic acid A effectively reduces acetylcholine breakdown, contributing to its anti-inflammatory properties and modulation of neurotransmitter release.
