Monascin

Azaphilonoid Pigment

Monascin is an azaphilonoid pigment derived from Monascus pilosus-fermented rice, commonly known as red-mold rice. This compound demonstrates anti-tumor-initiating and anti-inflammatory activities, particularly upon oral administration. Monascin functions as a Nrf2 activator and a PPARγ agonist, while also inhibiting NOR1 activation in response to nitric oxide donors. Its unique biological properties make it a valuable reagent for research in cancer biology and inflammation.
