Penicillamine

Heavy Metal Chelator

Penicillamine is a D-(-)-enantiomer of penicillamine that functions primarily as a heavy metal chelator. It facilitates the removal of excess copper and can influence oxidative stress levels. Additionally, it has implications for modulating immune responses and is investigated for its effects on seizure activity through nitric oxide and NMDA pathways. Penicillamine is utilized in research focused on Wilson's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and cystinuria.
