Sapropterin

PAH cofactor

Sapropterin, also known as (6R)-Tetrahydro-L-biopterin, serves as an essential cofactor for phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH), playing a crucial role in the metabolism of phenylalanine. Its primary biological activity includes the reduction of blood phenylalanine levels, making it a valuable reagent in research on phenylketonuria (PKU). Additionally, Sapropterin has been implicated in the exacerbation of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), providing insights into its potential effects on autoimmune conditions.
